Oops!
We had hoped that people would read Dara's story, enjoy it the way they've been enjoying all the other "Meet the Beatles Fans" stories (and other great free stuff on the site), and feel like helping Dara out. But we made a mistake. We're not professional fund raisers, and we're not trying to be. I get phone calls from several charities asking for contributions. They usually tell you the saddest story possible, build up your sympathy, and then ask if they "can count on you." And I still contribute to some of them, even though I know that probably 50% of what I send is going towards "administrative costs."
So we goofed up. Dara's story was upbeat. It told the story of a young woman who has used Beatle music to soothe a life that's seen lots of difficulties. Dara herself downplays her disabilities.
I suppose we could have told a great sob story, and concentrated on the difficulties of being confined to a wheelchair, not to mention the pain involved in the surgeries. We could have made you feel sorry for Dara. Instead, we showed her as she really is - an upbeat (against the odds), happy young woman headed off to college.
So, we're asking again for your help. Dara is still needing money to pay for a new wheelchair for college. There are a LOT of people that now visit this site on a regular basis. If you only want to contribute $5 (less than the price of a decent sandwich), that's fine. It'll add up. $10, great! (yeah, you'd get fries and a drink with that sandwich). Whatever you can - that's great. If you can't, well, offer a prayer - they're free and still appreciated. And just so you know, there are no administrative fees - every penny will go towards Dara's fund.
(And to those of you that have already made a contribution - it's greatly appreciated, and we thank you.)
